Polymer clay is an incredibly versatile material. It is strong, lightweight and ideally suited to a full range of unique and colorful designs. A cane is a rod of clay consisting of two or more colors. The colors inside the rod are constructed so that when the clay rod is sliced, a pattern is revealed. In this hands on class, learn to make the following basic canes: bull’s-eye and bull’s-eye variations, pinwheel, and checkerboard. Skinner blend sheets which can be incorporated into canes will also be covered. The bull’s-eye, pinwheel and checkerboard canes can be used as standalone patterns, or as elements in more complex canes. An overview of the many uses for simple canes will be presented. By the end of class students will have a working knowledge of basic cane building and Skinner blend construction, and will have several finished canes to take home for use in the studio. Tool kits will be provided.
