Sand Casting- NEW class available in the studio or online
Learn in the studio or from the comfort of home!
Have you wanted to experience one of the most low-tech ways of casting molten metal? Come experiment with direct pour sand casting, one of the oldest and simplest casting methods available. In this fun one day workshop be inspired as you create your own pendants, buttons, pins, rings or other jewelry components. Simple one and two part molds will be explored, as students will create a minimum of one finished piece. Techniques will include how to prepare the mold, preparation of casting materials, safety issues, use of a gas fueled torch, and finishing tips. An easy way to recycle clean silver or PMC scrap, you will want to do this process again and again in your own studio! In case your first choice/ idea does not work out, students are encouraged to bring several models (up to 1.5 inches) / ideas to explore. The pressed pieces will not be damaged, but should not be too delicate and must not have any undercuts. 2 ozt. of clean silver scrap or casting grain to be provided by the student, OR sterling casting grain may be pre-ordered from the studio. All registered students will receive access to the zoom class recording for two weeks after the class date.

No jewelry experience is required, but comfort with a torch is required for online students (ages 18 and up).
Class Fee: $120 + $55 Materials Kit Fee payable at registration. Includes a casting frame & casting sand for student to keep.

- In studio class is currently limited to 6 students to allow for social distancing. In studio students will have use of torches, crucibles, studio tools and equipment, and finishing supplies during class.
- Live online seats via Zoom are limited to 6 students. Registration deadline for Zoom class is October 11 too allow time for preparation and shipping of class materials kit..
There is a required materials list for registered online students. Please allow time to order any materials you may need.

What to expect for the live online workshop:
This workshop consists of various live online demonstrations delivered via Zoom (Eastern Standard Time), mixed with independent student working time. During working time, students are encouraged to stay logged in to continue asking questions via Zoom while working to discuss their project in progress, ask questions of the instructor and resolve issues.
The focus of this technique based workshop will include the fundamentals of sand casting with sterling silver. Simple one and two part molds will be discussed. Different methods of finishing cast objects will also be covered.
Online students will need the following materials and supplies for the best class experience:
Personal Safety equipment- Safety glasses, work apron, cotton clothing, closed toe shoes.
Models for casting
2 ozt sterling silver casting grain or clean scrap silver to upcycle
Gas fueled torch- Mapp gas, Acetelyne/ air, Oxy/ Aceteline, or Oxy/ Propane torch. (Butane torches will net get hot enough.)
