Lost Wax Casting: RINGS! NEW class available In studio or online!
Learn in the studio, or from the comfort of home!
This weekend intensive will take you from wax model to finished silver ring as you learn about the lost wax casting process. Learn the basics of wax carving and model finishing techniques as you create your ring design. Then prepare your model for casting by spruing and investing. On the second day we will burn out the wax using a kiln, and then pour molten silver into the cavity to produce the positive of the ring. After casting, learn how to clean up and finish your ring. Tools will be available for use.
All registered students will receive access to the zoom class recording for two weeks after the class date.
Saturday, November 21 10:00 am - 6:00 pm AND Sunday, November 22 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
All levels are welcome, but comfort with a torch is required for online students (ages 18 and up).
Class Fee: $275 + $25 Materials fee. The cost of sterling silver casting grain is not included, and will be determined by weight after your ring has been cast. In studio students will be charged for casting grain used at the end of class on Sunday.

- In studio class is currently limited to 6 students to allow for social distancing. In studio students will have use of torches, crucibles, studio tools and equipment, and finishing supplies during class.
- Live online seats via Zoom are limited to 6 students. Registration deadline for Zoom class is November 7 to allow time for preparation and shipping of class materials kit.

What to expect for the live online workshop:
This workshop consists of various live online demonstrations delivered via Zoom (Eastern Standard Time), mixed with independent student working time. During working time, students are encouraged to stay logged in to continue asking questions via Zoom while working to discuss their project in progress, ask questions of the instructor and resolve issues.
On Saturday the focus of this technique based workshop will include the basics of wax carving and model finishing techniques as you create your ring design(s). Then prepare your model for casting by spruing. If you have the facilities, you can also invest your models for casting.
On Sunday the lost wax casting process will be demonstrated using a tabletop vacuum caster. In studio students will cast, then methods of finishing cast objects will be demonstrated.
Online students have the option to send out their ring models to their casting company of choice, have Flux Metal Arts cast their rings for them, or arrange studio time by appointment for the complete casting experience from melting the metal to casting (must be arranged by December 5, 2020)
Online students will need the following materials and supplies for the best class experience:
Personal Safety equipment- Safety glasses, work apron, cotton clothing, closed toe shoes.
small wax files
double end wax file
wax carving tools
gram scale for weighing wax models
1 ozt sterling silver casting grain or clean scrap silver to upcycle
Gas fueled torch- Mapp gas, Acetelyne/ air, Oxy/ Aceteline, or Oxy/ Propane torch. (Butane torches will net get hot enough.)
powdered casting flux or powdered boric acid
pickle, copper tongs
